Seoul House is a restaurant on Steeles known for BBQ. With a new menu on the way that may all change. It wasn’t our first visit to Seoul House but this visit had something else to offer. We hear that the new chef they are hiring next month is the best for Korean food in the GTA. The new menu will include 3 new types of food every month. We had one of them which we’ll get to below.
We went around 7pm and it was packed. Although it was full we were seated quickly and they could accommodate for more. I even had to come back the next day as I left my camera bag, and saw that the extra room was full. Talk about friendly, talk about extremely popular.
The servers were very attentive, friendly, and all wore aprons. I counted 4 of them working all tables. Is this something to write about? Yes. Why? It was very apparent that speed and cleanliness was a big part of the job. All the servers had their hair tied up to ensure it doesn’t get on your food. Sounds like common sense but next time you go to another restaurant check out your server. You’ll notice.
We’ll get to the new dishes in a bit, but we’ll give it in the same order it was served. You’ll be able to eat digitally with us! The side dishes at Seoul House provided quite a bit of variety, unlike most places with the same base taste of kimchi. The dishes were presented well, and the potato even looked like it was a scoop of ice cream. A bite into each and I knew these were fresh.
Now, the more interesting part, a plate of soy marinated crabs(간장게장 $14.99) had arrived. It’s part of the new menu that should shake things up a bit. If this is an indicator of things to come, I’m truly excited to wait for those new dishes. If you want soybean stew (된장찌개) as a combo, the total will end up being $15.99.
Ever since returning from Korea, having been to Yeongcheon (영천 famous for crabs), I’ve craved this. We thought we’d never find this in Toronto/Thornhill. It’s a dish that really shows a different side of Korean food, other than the spicy or kimchi tastes. Knowing what it truly tastes like in Yeongcheon, I can say this comes very close, the only difference is I’m not eating it next to a beach. At least I know now where to go when I need my Soy Crab. So happy.
We had the Pork Short Rib (양냠돼지갈비 $21.99) which is what most people will get. A minimum of two orders is plentiful. You don’t have to worry about not having enough. It’s cooked on real charcoal, giving it a nice smoky flavour. Not all places do this so don’t be tricked by imitators. Since it’s marinated, it has a salty taste and not dry. I’d recommend this to new comers of Korean BBQ or even the experts.
The last thing on our table was the soybean stew (된장찌개). It came with a natural spicy flavour, not boosted by powered or chili, but just coming from the peppers in the stew. There were a lot of vegetables which I found was unique to Seoul House. I usually don’t take note of this dish, as it’s supposed to be a side dish, but it was that good. I guess what I want to say here is that the ingredients weren’t cheap, but really rich.
At the end of dinner we got a special drink. I forgot the name of it but its sweet. I guess it takes the place of dessert.
Seoul house is a place to add to your go to list. Don’t know where to eat something new? Can’t decide on stews or BBQ? Want to eat Soy Crab? Pick Seoul House, you can’t go wrong. If you’re there with the lunch crowd then stews and their lunch boxes are popular, while meat (주물럭) is the choice for dinner. With the holiday season coming up, why don’t you pick up one of their gift certificates? It’ll make for a good family dinner.
