Produced by KPOPME in conjunction with Cube Entertainment, the historic Danforth Music Hall acted as a familiar venue for an intimate gathering. Still, Hyun A fans could choose to get even closer if they were lucky enough as ticket sales for the top tier sold out within minutes. The fans in the front row with tier 1 tickets were treated to VIP like service that included a meet & greet and photo opportunity. Some twitter posts put these fans in line 7 hours prior to the start of the show. Talk about true fans!
The host for the night, Shimmy, introduced the Toronto’s very own Chérie as the show openers performing a cover of Hyun A’s Ice Cream. Three of the members, Jazmin, Blooe, and Kalli won the Toronto portion of KPOPME’s dance contest for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Hyun A’s image from her third mini-album A Talk held the stage for a short time. Hyun A with arms looped through two shirtless men in monkey masks instead brought an all female dance crew to fill the floor. The four dancers entered the stage to the flashing lights and smoke with the much awaited Hyun A also doing a bit of an intro dance.
Hyun A opened the show with Roll Deep before performing her hit song Ice Cream and proceeding to the Q & A session. With a board filled with post-it notes the first question and arguably the most important question came from the audience. An eager fan asked “Do you have a boyfriend?”. The answer is no. Questions from the board were themed around super heroes which brought up a great opportunity for Hyun A to talk about her photo shoot with Marvel’s Deadpool. The other superhero question from the audience was answered using a super villain, with Hyun A choosing to be DC’s Harley Quinn, possibly due to the similar sexy style they both sport.
The more insightful part of the Q & A session had Hyun A reveal a comeback for the first time to Toronto fans. Confirming that she can’t lie on stage and to her fans, Hyun A revealed that she is preparing for an album and hinted that at the end of her North American Tour she may have something ready, pushing that it’ll be out soon.
The A Talk intro brought the crowd back into the music with a black and red theme and dancers holding black feathered fans. She performed U & ME with purple lights signalling the transition to a lighter feel-good jam and a video break with a lot of doors. Only Hyun A could make walking in and out of doors interesting.
Her performance of RED (빨개요) had the audience singing along to the chorus, which surprised and delighted the artist to even make a point of it during the next break. Hyun A asked the audience to sing the chorus a capella, rewarding them with another moment of the dance.
Hyun A’s stage presence wasn’t the only prize that audience members received. A raffle brought two lucky participants on stage to determine their similarities to Hyun A by answering “A or B” questions. The dancing didn’t stop with Hyun A personally choosing 5 lucky participants the audience for a mini dance competition next to her on stage. These fans must have been ecstatic to be chosen by Hyun A herself! Being quite fair, she chose 2 front row participants, 2 mid section and 1 lucky boy from the balcony section. All the participants were shy at first (and who wouldn’t be, knowing that an idol like Hyun A, one of the best dancers in the industry, was on stage next to them?) but as the music started, the group got into the groove and as soon as one of the participants got low to the dance floor they all followed, quickly changing up the dynamic from the start. A back hug for the lucky boy from the balcony put him in first place showing his visible excitement and the shock on his face. The others received Polaroids that Hyun A took before the show.
Hyun A also revisited her classics performing her debut single Change, followed by Freaky (꼬리쳐), and ended off with the 2nd song off her EP A’wesome, How’s This? (어때) which was spectacular to see up close in person, and her popular hit song Bubble Pop that had most of the audience jumping on their feet even from the balcony.
How’s This? is a great club banger and party song that energized the crowd, with Hyun A’s body moving perfectly to the choreography of the chorus. If you don’t know the song, you can view it here.
With all the different aspects of the show the audience could see Hyun A in different layers. The queen of Kpop not only showed she was a master of her art, but treated fans with sincere kindness and appreciation. After an encore performance Hyun A ended the show by revealing her desire to come back to Toronto, taking to the mic again to say:
